Can my child still apply for Fremantle College if we live outside the college’s local intake area?
Yes, you can still apply. Local intake area applications will be processed first and applications from those who reside out of this area will be assessed from Term 3, once we have determined the availability of student places within that year group.
When do enrolments close for Fremantle College?
The Department of Education specifies that all enrolments for Year 7 students should be received by the first Friday of Term 3 for planning purposes. Fremantle College also takes enrolments for all year groups throughout the year. Applications for Specialist programs and Academies should be received by 24 May 2019.
Does my child have to complete an interview with the college when enrolling?
All students who are enrolling for Years 8 to 12 are required to meet with one of our Associate Principals prior to starting at Fremantle College. This enables the college to create a timetable that is best matched to the needs of the student, discuss the college’s expectations and enable the student to meet some of the college staff before their first day.
Do I need to come in to the college to collect an enrolment form?
We do welcome all families to come in and collect an Application for Enrolment, however, you can also download one from our website: https://fremantlecollege.wa.edu.au
What is the difference between a Specialist program and an Academy?
Our Approved Specialist Programs are endorsed by the Department of Education and prepare students for future pathways and further study. Entry into Specialist programs at Fremantle College is via interview and/or audition and is open to all students. Our Academies are college based programs and selection is completed by college staff.
Is my child able to apply for a Specialist Program if we live outside the college’s local intake area?
Yes, application and selection into our Specialist Programs is open to all students, including those who reside outside our local intake area. If your child’s application to a Specialist Program is successful they will be offered a place at the college.
Is my child able to apply for an Academy if we live outside the college’s local intake area?
Yes, your child can apply for our Academies, however, if their application is successful their place within the Academy will be held, pending a successful out of area application process in Term 3.
Are there additional costs for students involved in Specialist programs and academies?
Yes, most of our Specialist programs and Academies do incur additional charges and the college requires these to be paid at the start of the school year. Information on these charges can be found on our website: https://fremantlecollege.wa.edu.au
Can my child apply for more than one Specialist program or Academy?
Yes, your child can apply for and accept a position in more than one program. Many programs require additional time outside of school and we recommend discussing student workload with your child prior to accepting any program offers. Please note that the college timetable may prevent a student from accepting a position in more than one program.
Can a student apply for a Specialist program or Academy in Years 8 to 10?
Yes, students may apply for programs in all year groups, if the program is offered and places are available. The college also has a waitlist system and is able to notify families if places become available throughout the year. In Years 11 and 12 students select WACE courses.
What is the difference between Gifted and Talented and the Academic Excellence Academy?
Fremantle College’s Gifted and Talented Selective Academic Program is a Department of Education Secondary Selective Program. Students wishing to be involved in this program must apply online through the Department, and applications are open from October through February: https://www.education.wa.edu.au/web/at-school/gifted-and-talented-programs. Testing takes place in March and students are offered places directly from the Department of Education. The program provides students with a rich curriculum that is compacted and differentiated for their particular needs.
The Academic Excellence Academy is a college based program and selection is completed by college staff following analysis of student data. This program provides students with an extended curriculum designed to encourage them to excel.
How do I apply for my child to be part of the Autism Extension Program?
Places in our Autism Extension Program for students in Years 7 to 10 are limited and are determined each year by an independent panel. Parents should complete an Application for Enrolment form, indicating that you wish to apply for the Autism Extension Program, and submit this to the college by 24 May 2019. Applications are reviewed and take into consideration medical diagnosis and documentation, academic capacity, independent behaviour strategies and personal care.
Is there an orientation program for in-coming students?
Yes, we have an Orientation Day for in-coming Year 7 students in November as well as an induction program, the Big Days In, on the first two days of the school year. There is also an Orientation Day for students with additional needs and Specialist program activity days are held throughout the year.
Does the college have a second hand uniform shop?
No, we don’t have a second hand uniform shop however all new items can be purchased from Uniform Concepts in Willetton. Families who require financial assistance with uniform purchases can contact the college to find out about support that is available.
